The Dogwood Travel Duffel Bag - PDF Sewing pattern

The Dogwood Travel Duffel is a large carry-on sized bag with several pockets to help you organize your belongings. This bag is great as carry-on luggage or an overnight bag. It has one large cargo pocket with flap closure on the front, 2 zippered side cargo pockets, one large exterior zippered pocket on the front with 3 clear vinyl pockets inside. 

On the inside of the bag are 2 large side slip pockets and 1 large zippered pocket. 

There is an optional suitcase strap on the back of the bag (see tester photos on the left). You can attach a cross body strap with either grommets or D-ring connectors. There are also 2 top handles which can be embellished or left a little more simple. 

This bag can be made on a domestic sewing machine but please read carefully through the entire pattern - especially the interfacing section - for tips on handling bulky seams.

Exterior fabric:

1/2 yard Exterior 1
1 yard Exterior 2
1/4-1/2 yard Exterior 3 (1/4 yard if using vinyl)

Lining fabric:

2 yards quilt weight cotton 
Clear vinyl (19” W x 7” H) (optional)

Interfacing:

1 yard Fusible fleece (45” W)
5 yards Fusible woven interfacing (20” W)
1/2 yard Peltex (20” W)
(1) piece foam interfacing (17.5” W x 10” H) 

Notions and supplies:

(2) 14mm magnetic snaps
(2) 1.5” swivel clasps (with wider opening)
(1) 1.5” rectangle slide
(1) 18” zipper for main closure (#4.5 or #5)
(1) 16” zipper for exterior front zipper pocket (#4.5 or #5)
(2) 9” zippers for side cargo zipper pockets (any type)
(1) 12” zipper for interior zipper pocket
(6) purse feet (optional)
(2) 14mm grommets (1/2” inner diameter or larger) OR
(2) 1” D-rings 
82” L pre-made piping (or make your own)
Velcro (hook and loop tape) 3” L x 1” H
Double-sided tape or fabric glue

 

MEASUREMENTS: 17” W x 11”H x 9” D

SEWING EXPERIENCE: This project is suitable for an intermediate/advanced sewist. It is not very difficult but it is a very time consuming project due to the number of pockets to sew and it is more difficult to maneuver because of its size. It will take between 6-8 hours to make (more for less experienced sewists). The mini Dogwood takes much less time and it is definitely suitable for a confident beginner/intermediate. A mini can be done in about 5 hours.
