The Calla Convertible backpack easily converts from a shoulder bag to a backpack with a slight change in strap configuration. It has one large zippered pocket on the front and 2 interior slip pockets with a link to a tutorial to add an interior zippered pocket as well.
The main zipper closure opens very wide to allow easy access and an accordion style gusset at the bottom of the zipper keeps all of the contents of your bag where it belongs - inside the bag!
This bag has a nice slim design - not bulky like most backpacks and it is perfect for an iPad, and books with letter sized paper.
I have prepared a short video to show you how the Calla backpack converts from a shoulder bag to a backpack and how to select the appropriate hardware for the pattern:

 

SUPPLIES:


Exterior fabric:
1/2 yard quilt weight cotton accent fabric
1/2 yard quilt weight main fabric


Lining fabric:
1 yard quilt weight cotton


Interfacing:
2.5 yards lightweight fusible
1 yard fusible fleece
14” x 3.5” piece of Peltex or similar heavyweight interfacing


Notions and supplies:
(1) 7” zipper
(1) 22” zipper (or longer)
(2) 1” triangle rings (can be purchased at http://emmalinebags.com)
(4) 1” D-rings
(2) 1” swivel clasps
(2) 1” rectangle slides
double sided tape (DST)

MEASUREMENTS:
Width: 13 inches
Height: 14 inches
Depth: 2.5 inches

SEWING EXPERIENCE: This project is suitable for an intermediate sewist. It can be made in 3 or 4 hours depending on your sewing experience.
